Media Critics

The first critic I looked into was A.O. Scott. I find him interesting because theres a lot of drama and controversy surrounding his name. I immediately found two articles about a review he wrote about the recent Avengers film. His opinion, a pretty unpopular one as far as the movie goes, definitely hit a nerve with Sam Jackson (Nick Fury in the film, and all around badass). The links to the articles are here and here. While I disagree with A.O.'s opinion on the film, I have to give him props for writing what he's really thinking, despite it being unpopular.

The second critic I looked into was Manohla Dargis, a peer of Scott's with a super crazy name! I found an article detailing her thoughts on a variety of subjects on Jezebel! Jezebel is one of my favorite sites, I check it pretty much every day. If you're not familiar with it, definitely check it out. The article is here. I find her very outspoken and strong. I agree with a lot of her opinions, and was interested to read her thoughts on the Hunger Games film (of which I am a fan).

Slate articles

The first two articles were interesting to me with their connection between what they referred to as criticism versus the idea of 'fandom'. I never really considered that in order to write about things like television, one must be generally interested in the topic or show. I also thought it was interesting how fans will usually seek out a critic who holds the same beliefs and opinions that they do. This seems a lot like people's biases towards news channels. They're not looking for the best/ most neutral channel; they're looking for a channel that leans the way that they lean.

The hyperlinks I chose were both about specific television shows. The first one took me to an article written by Sepinwall about the Sopranos. I appreciated this article because it was interesting to see an article written BY him after reading two articles ABOUT him. The other hyperlink took me to another critic's article about the show Lost. While I didn't know much about the article because I have not seen that far into the series (the article was about season 6, whereas I have only watched until season 3), I found the critic's frustration amusing, as frustration from the plot is exactly why I stopped watching the show.

TV!

Shows I watch:
  1. Game of Thrones
  2. True Blood
  3. Boardwalk Empire
  4. The Big C
  5. Walking Dead!
  6. American Horror Story!
  7. Sons of Anarchy
All these shows are killer. I have noticed that I tend to go for shows with more "adult content". American Horror Story might be my favorite, I thought FX totally nailed it with this one. I tend to favor FX and HBO.

Peripheral Shows:
  1. Baseball (my boyfriend is obsessed- Reds games specifically)
  2. Parks and Rec (my roommates)
  3. Louie (roommates)
Parks and Rec I like a bit more than I used to (I LOVE Aziz Ansari). Louie is pretty funny too.

Guilty No-Gos:
  1. Mad Men
  2. Modern Family
I should watch Mad Men, but I can't get committed to another show right now.

Guilty Pleasures:
  1. Unfortunately, 16 and Pregnant
  2. also unfortunately, Teen Mom
I can't help it. I love watching them try to figure out what to do. Maybe I'm a sadist, but the show makes me feel better about whatever struggles I have in my own life because at least I don't have a baby on top of all that!

All Time Favs:
  1. Family Guy
  2. American Dad
  3. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  4. Spongebob
  5. Tosh.0
I have seen EVERY American Dad episode. Multiple times.

Shows I used to like:
  1. Grey's Anatomy
  2. ER
  3. House (I guess a lot of hospital shows?)
  4. Lost (watched about 3 seasons and then it got WAY to complicated)
Shows I resisted:
  1. Game of Thrones (It took me a while, but I LOVE it)
  2. Boardwalk Empire (same deal)
I would rather eat charcoal than watch:
  1. the Golf Channel (my dad loves it)
  2. Fox News
  3. Pretty much any singing competition show (Idol, America's Got Talent, etc.)
Shows that piss me off:
  1. Ridiculousness- It is literally Tosh.0 except not funny.
  2. Jersey Shore- How are we letting these people be famous?
